Outside of Santander

Beaches: Langre, Somo, Pedrena’s beaches are some of the best in the area – the majority abound with wildlife and nature trails. Take the picnic set and fresh food – you won’t want to leave them!

Picos de Europa:  Acknowledged as one of the best mountain ranges in Spain, the area of ‘Fuente De’ boasts a spectacular cable car ride up into the mountains at around 3,300 feet. Fully guided walks are available, or discover the area yourself on one of the well-established routes for all abilities.

Sopena Cuevas (cave system), has just achieved national museum status thanks to its very modern approach to archeology and cave exploration. Cantabria has well over 3,600 cave systems in total.

Parque de Cabarceno: Excellent open drive through Zoo, a great place to picnic and for walking around. It has 30 km of drivable roads, pedestrian only trails within the complex.

Barca Mayor (near Cabezon de la Sal) : Beautiful 15th century village, well preserved and comparable with Santillana, not so touristy as Santillana, consider combining it with a visit to a nearby national park named Ucieda da Arriba, stunning and easy forest and mountain walking.

Asturias

Region (approx 60 minutes travel time): This region has a fabulous coastline, bordered by mountains leading into the Picos de Europa range and Covodonga National Park area. Both areas are very popular in the July August periods, so consider catching a tourismo interior bus to get around, dropping off at various stops along the way.

Bilbao and San Sebastian: If travelling further afield, then it’s well worth visiting these stunning cosmopolitan cities, with their expansive promenades, fine buildings and museums.
